ABR 검사는 정신적, 신체적 상태나 약물, 의식정도, 진정제 마취제 등의 effect을 받지 않으며 피검자의 능동적 reaction response이 불필요한 객관적 검사로, 신뢰도가 높아 출생직후의 유아나 소아, 주관적 청각검사가 불가능한 정신지체아, 비협조적인 환자 및 난청을 사칭하는 자의 청력 역치의 평가를 위한 검사로 임상적으로 가장 큰 호응을 얻고 있다아3)
청력 역치의 평가를 위한 검사시 주된 자극음으로는 click, pure tone, wide band click, tone burst, tone pip 및 logon이 있으며, 실제 임상 적용에 있어서는 click을 주로 사용한다.
